A very popular dish both in British and Indian culture is Tikka Masala Chicken. Touted as the most popular restaurant dish in the United Kingdom, Tikka Masala is also served widely in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. This meal is a combination of slow roasted chunks of chicken (comprising the “Tikka”) resting in a spicy “Masala” sauce. This dish is orange in appearance and spicy in taste. It is the main course of a meal; while Tikka Masala is almost always prepared with chicken, it can also contain lamb or fish depending on the preference of the eater.

One way that Tikka Masala is unique is it its mysterious origins. Nobody knows the true origin of the delectable treat, although there have been a few speculations on where it has come from. While Tikka Masala definitely has roots in Indian cusine, it is unclear where exactly the origins for the dish stem from. Some have claimed that it was first conceived in a restaurant in Indian and was modified and changed over a number of years, while other believe it was invented by famous chef Ali Ahmed Aslem in Glasgow. Many other speculations and stories exist on the true origins of Tikka Masala.

A traditional Tikka Masala Chicken includes diced chicken that is marinated in a combination of spices and yogurts that vary by the chef. After this marinates, the chicken is baked in a tandoor over and served with the spicy Masala sauce. Because this dish doesn’t have a specific historical origin, there is no traditional composition of the sauce; however, the most common ingredients include coconut cream, a tomato puree, and various spices, such as paprika and turmeric.
